Cerebral Palsy Man Nears End of His Stilt Walk

Last month I blogged about a young man who was planning to walk 800 miles across Michagan to raise money for cerebral palsy awareness.

Now, a full seven weeks later, Neil Sauter is completing his journey--a journey that has taken him across dusty back roads and through small towns.

Sauter began in Monroe County, then headed down to Toledo before he headed west to Grand Rapids, then North to the Upper Peninsula.

So far he has raised over $76,000 for his cause. $16,000 has come from complete strangers and $60,000 has come from a federal matching program.

People have been quite receptive of Neil...some have provided him with food and lodging while others have cheered him on from the sidelines. More than 40 media outlets have covered his story as he "stilted" across an average of 20 miles per day.

"I'm looking back on the trip a lot already," Sauter says. "At this point, I'm going to miss being on the road. I'm going to have a road-sickness instead of a homesickness. It's very peaceful to spend ll day walking. It's a simple, rewarding lifestyle."
