How Cerebral Palsy Is Detected in Children 0-6 Months

Cerebral palsy can be detected as early as birth. Cerebral palsy is a permanent neurological disorder appearing early in a child’s life. Cerebral palsy (a birth injury) does not progressively grow as it affects the individual’s ability to move coordinately. WebMD lists the causes of this brain injury:

• Genetic or metabolic abnormalities
• Complications during birth
• Head injuries suffered soon after birth
• Brain infections

The Early signs of Cerebral Palsy

The assessment of this birth injury can begin as early as before labor. There are signs to detect cerebral palsy in children ages 0-6 months. According to Scribd, some of the signs you should look for include:

• Observation Signs – Check the child’s behavior traits including alertness, fearfulness, and irritability during physical activities. Look to see if the child becomes easily fatigued, what position the child prefers to be in, and how much support you need to give when the child is sitting down. Examine for deformities in the arms, legs, and hips.

• Examination Signs – Check for the growth and weight to detect signs of this brain injury. The average height for children at birth is 20 inches with an average weight of 7 pounds. The head circumference average is around 35 centimeters. Other signs to look for include being able to socially smile around 4-6 weeks and being able to sit with support around 6 months.
